Course Description
This course examines Azerbaijan from the Soviet era to the period of restored independence. Topics include Soviet administrative and economic policies, collectivization, repressions, industrial development, and cultural transformations. Students also explore the rise of the national movement, the restoration of independence in 1991, and the challenges of state-building in the early 1990s. The course further analyzes the leadership of Heydar Aliyev, nation-building reforms, economic modernization, oil strategy, and contemporary developments culminating in the Garabagh Victory. Students gain analytical tools to understand the complexities of modern Azerbaijani history and its relevance to present-day statehood and identity.
