Course Description
This course focuses on the period from Azerbaijan’s incorporation into the Russian Empire to the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR). Students explore imperial policies, socio-economic changes, urbanization, the rise of the enlightenment movement, and the growth of national consciousness. The course provides an in-depth analysis of the political, intellectual, and cultural circumstances that led to the creation of the ADR in 1918, examining its reforms, institutions, and legacy. Students learn to connect historical developments with emerging ideas of modernity, identity, and statehood.
