Course Description

This course covers the major political and socio-economic developments in Azerbaijan from the medieval period through the early modern era. Students study the impact of the Mongol invasions, the rise and governance of the Qaraqoyunlu and Aq Qoyunlu states, the establishment and influence of the Safavid Empire, and the political organization of the khanates period.
Emphasis is placed on state formation, cultural and religious transformations, regional conflicts, and Azerbaijan’s role in broader geopolitical dynamics. Students develop skills in interpreting primary and secondary sources and understanding the long-term patterns that shaped the region.
