Course Description
This course aims to provide students with a scientific understanding of the fundamental principles of Azerbaijani folk music, including its modal–intonational system, the structural principles of modes (maqams), and their historical development. The course is designed to help students perceive Azerbaijani folk music not only as a body of practical performance traditions but also as a coherent, systematic, and well-structured musical system.
Based on the scholarly views of Uzeyir Hajibeyli, the course focuses on an in-depth analytical study of Azerbaijani folk music, explaining the principles of its modal structures, scale formations, and tetrachord system. At the same time, it aims to ensure the application of this knowledge in musicological research, compositional practice, and pedagogical activities.
One of the key objectives of the course is to develop students’ theoretical thinking and analytical approach in order to preserve and further develop the national musical heritage on a scientific basis and to present it appropriately within the context of international musical culture.
