Course Description
This course develops an analytical understanding of the South Caucasus as a strategically significant region within the contemporary international system and as a point where competing interests intersect. Students examine the interaction among South Caucasus states, including Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia and key actors shaping the wider geopolitical environment, including Russia, Turkey, Iran, Central Asia and the European Union. The course analyzes regional security architecture, energy and transport diplomacy, competing foreign policy strategies, intersecting economic interests and competition among major powers. It also explores the changing position of the South Caucasus in the context of international law, diplomacy and regional cooperation, including how external influences shape domestic politics and how new geopolitical realities generate both opportunities and risks. Students learn to evaluate the region not only as a geographical and historical space but also as an active political actor and strategic hub, and to analyze its dynamics within broader global power patterns.
