English
Course Description
This course examines the role of language in social interaction and explores how English, particularly in EFL contexts, reflects and shapes relationships within communities. Students study key sociolinguistic theories and concepts to understand how factors such as region, ethnicity, gender, and social class influence language variation and use. Major topics include language and identity, language attitudes, bilingualism, language planning, and the global role of English. Practical issues such as code-switching, language maintenance and loss, and the influence of social norms on language learning and teaching strategies are also discussed.
