New book is exploring ideas from the 1st Turkological congress held in Baku in 1926

A monograph titled “Common Alphabet, Orthography, and Literary Language Issues at the First Turkological Congress” authored by Elchin Ibrahimov, Doctor of Philology and Head of the Science Department at Karabakh University, has been published.

The book, issued by the decision of the University’s Academic Council, is dedicated to the centennial of the First Turkological Congress held in Baku in 1926. The Congress laid the foundation for national-cultural integration and scientific cooperation across the Turkic world in the early twentieth century and marked significant steps toward the formation of a common linguistic and writing system.

The monograph provides a comprehensive analysis of key themes of the Congress—namely the common alphabet, orthography, and literary language—drawing on historical sources and contemporary scholarly approaches. It thoroughly examines alphabet reforms, the transition initiatives from Arabic and Cyrillic scripts to the Latin alphabet, and the discussions surrounding the establishment of a unified writing system.

The book also explores the evolution of the idea of a common alphabet across different periods, shaped by political, ideological, and cultural factors, as well as its role in ongoing integration processes within the Turkic world. The speeches of Congress participants and the long-term impact of adopted decisions on Turkic languages are presented with concrete evidence. Thus, the monograph not only covers the historical context but also highlights the complexity and continued relevance of the common alphabet issue.

The scientific editor of the publication is Professor Vilayat Guliyev. The publication was supervised by Asad Aslanoglu, Director of National Heritage Cultural Historical Research Publications. The editor is Associate Professor Elmira Babayeva. The reviewers include Professor Adalat Tahirzade, Professor Ahmet Buran, critic and publicist Azer Turan, and Associate Professor Azizaga Najafov.
