Course Description
Linear spaces are introduced axiomatically, followed by the study of linear dependence and independence of vector systems. Through these concepts, students learn to define bases, determine the dimension of a space, and understand the invariance of dimension with respect to the choice of basis. Further topics include linear transformations, quadratic forms, signatures of quadratic forms, the law of inertia, and the transformation of matrices of linear mappings under a change of basis. Students also study Euclidean spaces, decompositions into direct sums of subspaces, and self-adjoint linear transformations. This part provides a foundational framework for understanding analysis in infinite-dimensional spaces.
