Course Description
This course studies the material and spiritual culture of peoples, including everyday life, economic activity and traditions, as well as processes of change and development across time. Students examine ethnographic features of contemporary peoples and of ancient peoples that have left a lasting trace in history, building fundamental knowledge of cultural formation and development in Azerbaijan and across the world. The course includes the study of ancient belief systems, astral and mythic worldviews and their continuity and transformation in modern customs and rituals, helping students understand deep layers of national heritage. It emphasizes the practical use of ethnography for presenting Azerbaijan’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage to international audiences and for forming objective scholarly arguments about national cultural values. Students also analyze historical cultural connections between Azerbaijan and other regions and peoples, identifying shared values and mechanisms of mutual influence and developing the ability to evaluate cultural heritage within a global context.
