Course Description
In this course, archaeology is introduced as an independent field of historical study focused on discovering, investigating and interpreting material culture. Students learn the subject, methods and scientific and practical significance of archaeology, particularly for prewriting periods, through the study of Azerbaijan’s ancient archaeological cultures and earliest settlement sites, including Quruchay, Azykh, Taglar, Kultapa, Leylatapa and the Khojaly-Gadabay culture. Using evidence such as Azykh findings, jar burials and rock carvings, students explore ancient worldviews and religious and mythic beliefs. The course also highlights how archaeological excavations contribute to research on ancient statehood history and includes practical training in the Azykh Archaeological Research and Analysis Laboratory, where students gain skills in cleaning, analysis and documentation of finds.
