Course Description
This course examines the political, socio-economic and cultural development of the Turkic peoples from antiquity to the early modern period, focusing on origins, early homelands and migration routes and the formation of early Turkic states. Students study major Turkic political formations including the Huns, Göktürks, Uighurs, Khazars and Kipchaks, analyzing governance, military organization and cultural life. The course explores early writing systems such as Orkhon Yenisei inscriptions and the Uighur alphabet, religious beliefs, social organization and interactions with surrounding civilizations. It also examines the transformation after the acceptance of Islam, including Turkic Muslim states and their political structures, administrative models and cultural and military systems.
