Course Description
This course examines the formation and early development of the international system from the emergence of the Westphalian order to the early twentieth century. Students study the foundational principles of international relations, including sovereignty, diplomacy, and balance of power, while analyzing the interaction of political, economic, and ideological forces shaping interstate relations. The course explores the impact of political and industrial revolutions, colonial competition, alliance systems, and the evolution of diplomatic practices, with particular attention to the processes leading to the First World War. By combining historical narrative with analytical frameworks, the course enables students to understand how early international structures and ideas laid the groundwork for modern global politics.
