Course Description
The History of Fashion Design course is a theoretically oriented subject that examines the historical stages of development of clothing and fashion, aesthetic styles, and their cultural and social contexts. The course explains, on a scholarly basis, that clothing is not only functional but also a visual form of expression carrying aesthetic, symbolic, and cultural value.
The primary objective of the course is to develop students’ understanding of the historical evolution of fashion design, including silhouettes, construction solutions, materials, and decorative features formed in different periods, as well as to analyze the relationship between fashion processes and social, economic, and cultural factors. The course systematically presents the evolution of clothing forms from ancient times to the contemporary era.
The History of Fashion Design course enhances students’ aesthetic sensibility, historical awareness, and analytical thinking skills, enabling them to justify contemporary fashion projects within a historical and cultural context. By providing a strong theoretical foundation for students specializing in fashion design, the course supports the development of stylistic continuity and innovative approaches in creative practice.
