Course Description
This course examines political and social transformations from the Reformation era to the nineteenth century, focusing on the ideas and upheavals that shaped the modern West. Students study Enlightenment thought, political reforms in Europe and the American War of Independence and the formation of the United States, followed by the French Revolution and the Napoleonic period. The course analyzes industrialization and economic modernization, nationalism and nation-state formation in Europe and the American Civil War, as well as nineteenth-century imperialism and colonial competition and the rise of liberalism, socialism and conservatism, presenting the transition toward capitalist, democratic and industrial societies through comparative historical analysis.
