Course Description
This course studies the early foundations of European and American historical development from antiquity through the early modern period. Students analyze the rise of Greek city-states and early democratic ideas, the development of philosophy, arts and science and the formation and expansion of the Roman Republic and Empire, including governance and legal traditions and the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The course examines the spread of Christianity and the church as a political institution, the emergence of feudal relations and key medieval transformations including migration, the formation of Byzantium and the Holy Roman Empire, urban life, trade, crusades and church state relations. It concludes with the Renaissance, humanism, the Reformation, the rise of national monarchies and the Age of Discovery, including the incorporation of the Americas into European influence.
