Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive study of the Caucasus from ancient times to the contemporary period, focusing on the region’s complex political, economic, social and cultural development. Students examine the Arab and Mongol campaigns, the international situation and regional power balance in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and the transformations of the eighteenth century, alongside the formation of Caucasian cultures and interactions with civilizations and empires. The course analyzes the process of incorporation into the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century and its consequences, as well as national liberation movements, cultural revival and the spread of enlightenment ideas. It also covers key twentieth-century developments, including the emergence of independent states from 1918 to 1920, the strategic role of the Caucasus during the Great Patriotic War and changes in regional life from 1946 to 1985. In the contemporary section, students examine national processes, ethnic tensions, conflicts and the Caucasus in the international system, developing an ability to evaluate the region’s historical trajectory, cultural diversity and political transformations through critical and analytical approaches.
