Course Description
This course examines the political, social, economic and cultural development of Asia and Africa from the medieval period to the First World War through a comparative approach that connects local dynamics with broader global forces. Students study China, Japan, Iran, India, the Ottoman Turkish world, the Arab world and major African centres in their historical contexts, focusing on feudal structures, regional interactions and the role of religion and ideology in state formation. The course analyzes social stratification and the impact of colonialism and imperialism on internal development, helping students understand the foundations of transitions from feudal systems toward industrialization and modern statehood.
