Course Description
This course introduces the principles and practices of green chemistry, focusing on environmentally responsible approaches to chemical design, synthesis, and production. Students examine the Twelve Principles of Green Chemistry, sustainable reaction pathways, atom economy, alternative solvents, energy-efficient processes, and the use of renewable feedstocks. The course explores contemporary strategies for reducing waste, minimizing toxicity, preventing pollution, and designing safer chemicals and materials. Case studies highlight green innovations in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, materials science, and industrial chemistry, as well as the role of catalysis and biocatalysis in sustainable synthesis. Students learn to evaluate chemical processes from an environmental and safety perspective, propose greener alternatives to traditional laboratory and industrial methods, and understand the broader role of green chemistry in sustainability, education, and responsible scientific practice.
