Course Description
This course introduces the basic principles and research methods of archaeology and ethnography as key fields of historical study. The archaeology component examines excavation techniques, material culture analysis, and chronological classification. Students explore major archaeological sites in Azerbaijan—from ancient human settlements and Stone Age camps to Eneolithic, Bronze Age, and medieval monuments—and learn how archaeological evidence is used to reconstruct past societies.
The ethnography component focuses on the traditional lifestyles, economic practices, dwellings, clothing, beliefs, and rituals of different peoples. Special emphasis is placed on the ethnographic diversity of Azerbaijan’s regions, expressions of folk culture, and issues of cultural heritage preservation. The course equips students with the skills to interpret historical processes through material and intangible cultural evidence and to better understand the ethno-cultural identity of various communities.
